Tomorrow Is D-Day For Jackie Thompson - What’s He Been Up To?

June 3rd, 2008 Mark Lucherini |

As our own Russdogg previously posted, Jack Thompson is heading for a fall, with the Judge in his disbarment trial, Dava Tunis, recommending him as guilty on 27 out of the 31 charges he faced in his bar trial last year.

Of course, it’s only a recommendation, as it’s really down to the Flordia Supreme Court to decide the mans fate, but with a recommendation like that, it’s hard to see exactly how this could end in anything other than disbarrment for our very favourite belongs-in-an-insane-asylum video game critic.

But what’s Jack been up to exactly, since the news?

Tomonobu Itagaki Resigns From Tecmo, Then Courts Them

June 3rd, 2008 Mark Lucherini |

I may never forgive myself for such a horrible pun, but there you have it.

Tomonobu Itagaki, rockstar producer of the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series, and general loudmouth (great games buddy, but you really do have a mouth on you), has left Tecmo, hired himself a lawyer and decided to sue the pants off of them. (Never understood that phrase. Don’t want your pants, pal, I want your money. No, really, keep the pants. Please.)

Kotaku has the full press release from Itagaki, but it basically boils down to this: Itagaki was promised a bonus upon completion of Dead or Alive 4, but president of Tecmo, Yoshimi Yasuda, turned around and allegedly told him

if you are dissatisfied with the decision not to pay the bonuses, either quit the company or sue it.

Not the smartest thing to say to your star pupil, really, especially when your star pupil is as outspoken and brazen as Itagaki has been known to be.

Where will Itagaki end up now? That’s unknown, but the one thing that’s for sure is that he won’t be working on Dead or Alive 5, and that his promise that Ninja Gaiden 2 would be his swan song for that series was terribly accurate.

Resident Evil 5 Previews From Around The Net

June 3rd, 2008 Mark Lucherini |

Capcom showed off the latest episode of the Resident Evil Franchise at their Captivate 08 event, with some - but not all - of the flashy new things we can expect from this newest iteration.

Kotaku reports on the game playing very similar to Resident Evil 4 - with the villagers acting in much the same way they did in the previous installment, dodging bullets and melting away once they die. In fact, the way they describe it, the game almost sounds like a prettier version of RE4. But, of course, seeing as Kotaku were neither shown the “shadow” areas of the game - Jun Takeuchi, producer of the game, explained that those segments would be geared towards horror, where the bright, sunlit sections were straight up action - nor any of the other new improvements to the series, that’s most likely what the game would come across as to anyone.

Kotaku did stress, however, that the graphics were seriously something to write home about. Which they did.

Eurogamer has their own spin on the preview both sites saw, focusing more on the idea that, like in Resident Evil 4, setting yourself up in a defendable position is a bloody good idea, lest you be overrun by hordes of… creatures. They also go into more depth about a “hooded enemy” that stalks Chris Redfied, the protagonist, throughout the demo they were shown - one who swung a giant battleaxe which could take out part of a wall of building, thereby completely screwing up the defence you’d crafted for yourself.

The other part they focus on in the Eurogamer preview is how much the game takes, visually, from the film Black Hawk Down, with the same sun baked looked as the fact based film.

Other than that - and the news that the controls from 4 seem to be pretty much ported straight over here, so don’t expect a run and gun shooter - nothing more was heard. Capcom showed a trailer, with a female sidekick for Chris, and then proceeded to shut up about her. The previously rumoured cover system and drop-in drop-out co-op play (which had been released by Capcom, then retracted) was similarly completely ignored.

Of course, long time fans of the series mostly want any idea what the story is about. So far? We know that the game is set in Africa because Africa has something to do with the origin of the T-Virus.

Bloody teases.
